GLOBE-Integrate outdoor observations (Trees, Weather & Climate) and citizen-science into the classroom to benefit the environment.

What is GLOBE:
GLOBE is an international citizen science education programmesupported by NASA and in Ireland, funded by the EPA. GLOBE offers students the chance to participate in data collection and the scientific process to contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment (www.globe.gov).
We offer CPD for teachers, school workshops, project coordination, and develop educational resources.
Course Description:
This course is an exciting, practical, interactive, and informative exploration of how to better understand, sustain, and improve Earth’s environment at the local, regional and global scale using the internationally recognized GLOBE Programme.
This one-day CPD will focus on learning how to build key competencies for sustainable development for students through a process of taking weather and climate observations and investigating how weather and climate impacts, and is impacted by, native Irish trees and landscapes.
You will learn how to guide your students through environmental observations, inquiries, data collection, analysis, and solutions-oriented project work. Perfect for a JC geography or science teacher from any level seeking inspiration, a 5th/6th class primary school teacher in need of ideas/building understanding, or any teacher seeking ideas/CPD for in the field of climate/environmental education and education for sustainable development.
Earth spheres in focus: Atmosphere and Biosphere
GLOBE science protocols discussed: Air temperature, humidity, surface temperature, air pressure, wind direction, tree height, carbon storage, tree phenology (Green-up & Green Down), land cover classification.
Climate solutions included: Intro to Nature-Based Solutions to heat and afforestation.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn how to strengthen the focus of STEM and ESD in your school through the GLOBE Programme
- Learn how to use the scientific method to study nature around/in the school.
- Facilitate observations/experiments/measurements relating to the Atmosphere theme of GLOBE using inquiry-based learning.
- Learn how to teach students about cloud observations, satellites, and weather systems and how to record this using the GLOBE Observer APP.
- Learn to engage students in GLOBEs Biosphere protocols through practical hands-on experiments relating to tree height, carbon content, and seasonal change observations
- Learn skills for recording data, analysing data, and developing projects around collected data
- Incorporate this learning into the classroom setting.
