The Mental Health Awareness Initiative is a nationwide initiative to raise awareness among post-primary school teachers about student mental health and to highlight how teachers can play an active role as ‘One Good Adults’ in the lives of students. This workshop offers post-primary school teachers an opportunity to learn how to promote and support mental health and wellbeing within the classroom whether you are a business teacher, science or maths. This workshop is for ALL school staff. The initiative is being led by the Association of Teachers Education Centres in Ireland in collaboration with Jigsaw, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.
This workshop aims to increase your knowledge and awareness of the following:
• How you can play an active part in supporting and promoting mental health and wellbeing in school.
• Why developing good relationships in the classroom and throughout the school is essential for students’ wellbeing.
• Why teacher self-care is fundamental for you to support students mental health and wellbeing.
• How to implement the REAL approach in the classroom which can support and promote the mental health needs of students (Recognise, Encourage, Actively Listen, Let Someone Know).
“Promoting the mental health and well-being of our young people is a shared responsibility and is everybody’s business and not just the sole responsibility of any one individual, team or subject department”
